Harry Potter theme party – Movie night

With the new book ‘Harry Potter and the cursed child’ that came out a few weeks ago, everybody is talking about Harry Potter again. Since I have long wanted to do a themed Harry potter party this seemed like the perfect time! This really brought me back to the times I visited Harry Potter world in Universal Studios. If I could live there I would, It has all that I need, good food and fun attractions.

Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, If one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Albus Dumbledore

As for decorations I kept it quit simple, I made flags with the houses on each one, some of them I just kept in the Gryffindor colors. I found these ‘Do it yourself’ flags in brown and black. on the brown ones I painted dark red and yellow strips. On the black ones I stuck the other houses; Hufflepuff, Slytherin and Ravenclaw. I found the logo’s on google and I just adjusted them so they would fit on the flags.

Everything I served wasn’t just ordinary muggle food and drinks, oh no. I gave my guest some freshly brewed Polyjuice potion with –ssshhh- some cat hairs, I do what I can to be just like Hermione.

If you are a not so fond of drinking cat hairs but you still want to make your very own Polyjuice potion, then I have a the perfect recipe for you.

You will need:
-Sprite/ 7up
-Lime sorbet
-Green food coloring

In a big bowl scoop in 4-5 scoops lime sorbet and enough green food coloring to make this drink look just like.. well Polyjuice potion. Then slowly pour 1 liter of sprite or 7up –whatever you prefer-  over the sorbet. This will start to bubbly, when you poured everything in mix it good. I transferred this into a bottle and put on a Polyjuice label which I simply found on google. It’s that easy to make Polyjuice potion, now you can become everyone (just don’t forget to put in a hair or two of the person or animal you want to become).

Now this wouldn’t be a real Harry Potter party without Butterbeer. This isn’t my first time making Butterbeer and I must say I liked my Butterbeer better last time. I decided to try a different recipe this time just to see if this one would be as good. Last time I made a syrup wth brown sugar, butter and apple cider vinegar and topped it with cream soda. This time I made my own cream soda and added in some imitation butter. Cream soda isn’t easy to find in Belgium that’s why I decided to make my own. All in all this tasted really good.

What you will need:
-2 cups sugar
-1 cup water
-2-3 teaspoons imitation butter and vanilla
-1/4 cup heavy cream
-2 liters sparkling water (club soda)
-Heavy cream
-Sugar

Add into a high pot the sugar and water, let this boil until it is clear. Let this mixture cool and then add in the heavy cream and 2-3 teaspoons of imitation butter and vanilla. Add in the sparkling water and set aside. Next up you need to make the topping, for that you need to whip up some heavy cream and sugar (depending on how sweet you want it) and some of the imitation butter and vanilla. I never measure when it comes to making whipping cream. Then all you need to do is assemble your Butterbeer, pour in some of the drink and top it with the whipping cream.

This was really tasty and had a good caramel flavour.

“What’s coming will come and we’ll meet it when it does.” – Hagrid

Hagrids Birthdaycake that he made for Harry was a must at this party. I made a simple chocolate cake and topped it with pink cream cheese frosting and wrote ‘Happee Birthdae Harry’ in green frosting as messy as I could. Now my frosting  blended all together but that’s okay because this cake is all about being messy, Hagrid is not known for this good baking skills.

I also served some Gilly water that could be flavoured with some Eternelle’s potion. For this I printed out the Gilly water label that I again found on Google and then stuck on a water bottle, filled it up with –duh– water. I still had the potion bottle from the Harry Potter World, I just filled it up with some grenadine.

I also served my guest the famous “Bertie Bott’s every flavour beans”. I bought these cute bags and printed out the Bertie Bott’s label and stuck it on there. I filled the bag with jelly beans I found in the grocery store, it had 36 flavors of jelly beans. You could also buy some Harry potter jelly beans with the also nasty flavored beans in the bag.

These little potion bottle are purely for decoration. It bought little water bottles and put on different potion labels and then filled them with water and added in some food coloring.

Then I just needed to draw on ‘the scar’ on my forehead and put on some glasses and a Harry Potter shirt.

I will definitely do this again, this party was so much fun to organize.  If you are in doubt about doing a themed party then stop doubting and just do it –Insert Shia Labeouf just do it speech– because it’s so magical and fun.

See you soon,

Birgit
